Surviving Winter as an International Student (pt2)

Updated: Mar 23, 2023

In the previous post, we discussed winter's good and bad sides. Winter can be both exciting and daunting season. It can also be harsh for students who have never experienced the cold before. In this post, we will explore how international students can survive the winter storm and boredom during winter.

Surviving the Winter Storm

A winter storm can happen once in a while depending on which countries and provinces you live in. This is the best time for you to stay at home. Either taking a rest or working, being prepared before the winter storm is the best plan to survive it. You can:

1/ Updating the weather: the weather forecast will usually announce the winter storm 2-3 days before. For this reason, it is important for you to update it as soon as possible to create some plans during the storm such as commuting time.

2/ Grocery planning: During the storm, it is impossible for you to go out safely and comfortably as well as after the storm. Therefore, having a grocery plan on what you will buy beforehand will make your time staying at home be much easier. It also helps your life easier since you don't have to worry about what you need outside of the house.

3/ Snow cleaning: If you live in on-ground houses, there is a high chance that you will be asked to remove the snow in front of your house. Yet, do not underestimate the workload of it. It can be pretty exhausting.

4/ Winter shoes/ boots: there is no important use for winter shoes but this time. After the storm, the snow can fill up your knees. Having good pairs of winter shoes/ boots will help you walk outside easier and keep your feet from touching the cold water.

Surviving the Winter Boredom

Winter can turn into boredom after all the holidays because everyone rather staying at home than go out. Yet, this is a perfect time to:

1/ Restart and Refresh: It's the time when you can enjoy living slowly, reflecting on what has happened during the last year. It is also the time when you can refresh your mind by establishing new schedules, and trying out new hobbies,...

2/ Self-care routine: Taking care of yourself is important in all seasons. However, in winter, you can trick your boredom time into something you love such as a new skincare routine, a new shower routine or find out what self-care product is best fit for you. A little warm bath during cold winter is the best relaxation method.

3/ Picking up what you left: the book that you did not have time to read, now it's time to finish it. The project that you have not done, now it's time to pick up. Picking up what you have left when you were busy in other seasons is the perfect task to kill boredom during winter.

Each one of us will have a preference for our favourite season. For me, I am best enjoying my time during Spring and Summer. But every season has its own unique characteristics and things that we can do. No matter what the season is, they are the things that make our year complete. Especially international students, we try our best to enjoy and explore everything in a foreign country.
